A virtual tour is created from a series of still images taken around a central point, like these:
The quality of the final panorama depends heavily on the original stills. Lighting, composition and accurate positioning are crucial to produce high quality results.
Once the digital stills are obtained they're carefully blended using dedicated software to form a flat projection panorama, shown below:
These flat projections themselves are often used in certain circumstances to provide interesting graphics on webpages, product packaging, or in literature illustrations for example.
Finally, after adding any hyperlinks, the flat projection is converted to a virtual reality movie format that can be embedded into webpages or supplied on CD-ROM in high resolution. The virtual tour below is a small, low resolution example to demonstrate how virtual tours are viewed (they would normally be larger, as shown in our panorama portfolio).
